The Science and Speculation Behind the Fire
Yūdai: I can understand the argument that the Lahaina fire was an intentional "scorched-earth" crime for land-grabbing purposes. But how credible is the story that a weapon like the laser beams from old space-war movies was actually used?
Allan: That’s the big question. All sorts of rumors are flying around. Goro-san, you’re well-versed in these details, aren't you?
Goro: Well, I’ve gathered quite a bit. Some of it is likely delusion or exaggerated for effect, but let’s lay out the pieces of the puzzle.
First, as I mentioned, the way it burned was inconceivable for a normal fire. They call it a "wildfire," but Lahaina is quite far from the mountains, and the mountains themselves didn't burn. While some grasslands adjacent to the roads burned, if the fire had started there, it shouldn't have been able to leap across major roads to spread like that. There’s a narrative that fierce winds spread the fire, but reports suggest the winds weren't actually that strong out at sea during that time. And above all, a wildfire or a typical house fire generally doesn't generate the kind of heat required to melt aluminum.
Allan: The melting point of aluminum is about 660°C ($1220$°F). The melting point of asphalt is only around 150°C ($300$°F). If it was hot enough to melt the aluminum used in cars, you’d expect the surrounding asphalt to be a molten mess, but there are reports that the asphalt remained intact.
Goro: Exactly. Since I wasn't there personally, I can't say how reliable every report is, but looking at the photos from the scene, the anomalies are glaring. It looks as if cars were targeted with pinpoint precision. And here’s something fascinating: there are claims that the villas of wealthy residents scattered nearby all had blue roofs. Buildings or roofs that weren't blue were reportedly covered with blue tarps or repainted blue just before the fire.
Yūdai: Hmm? What’s the significance of that?
Goro: The theory is that since DEW uses blue laser light, blue objects reflect it or don't react to it, allowing them to evade the weapon's power. Some say the weapons are programmed that way... various theories.
Yūdai: Is that really plausible?
Allan: Well, if you search "blue to block the DEW" online, you’ll find plenty of articles debunking it as a total fake. It might just be that celebrities like the color blue—it looks cool, after all (laughs). Some counter-reports say a house with a red roof survived while everything else burned, or that the "blue tarp" stories are being confused with recovery work from previous hurricane damage. These types of fake info get mixed in, which makes it tricky.
Goro: True. The most sensational stories spread the fastest. However, it is an interesting fact that the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) already possesses DEW technology. One of their two primary surveillance sites for tracking man-made objects in space is the Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico—and the other is on Maui, Hawaii. The idea that this facility might be involved is a compelling lead.
The Maui site is called the "Air Force Maui Optical and Supercomputing (AMOS)" station. It consists of the "Maui Space Surveillance System (MSSS)" for monitoring space objects and the "Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC)" for R&D. This facility houses the Department of Defense’s largest optical telescope, part of the Advanced Electro-Optical System (AEOS). They also recently announced the installation of a "Sodium Guide Star" device, which propagates light into the atmosphere's sodium layer to create "artificial stars."

Yūdai: Your investigative skills are as impressive as ever, Goro-kun.
Goro: Not really—this is all published on the Air Force Research Laboratory’s own website. Anyone can read it.
Allan: There are rumors that a combination of DEW and weather warfare was used in Lahaina, and it turns out Maui has exactly the kind of facility where such rumors could take root.
Goro: There’s also a story circulating that the 2,000 missing children were loaded onto buses and kidnapped.
Yūdai: Didn't they burn to death?
Goro: Apparently, no bodies have been found.
Yūdai: Are people saying they were abducted by UFOs?
Goro: The story is that several yellow school buses were parked there before the fire broke out, and they vanished along with the children. There are even claims of an undersea tunnel connecting Maui to Oahu (where military bases are located), and that they were taken through there. Some say a Walmart shopping center served as a waypoint for this tunnel project... as usual, the stories seem to be growing and expanding.
Allan: Well, stories of child abduction and celebrity pedophilia are linked almost instantly these days. But even if we don't know about a "mass kidnapping," it’s certain that a significant number of children died. Schools were closed that day, and parents were away at work, so many children were home alone.
Yūdai: You're suggesting even that was part of the plan?
Allan: It might have been. It seems like anything goes now.
Yūdai: But look, if this "death ray" type of weapon is already operational and can target anyone on Earth with pinpoint precision from space, wouldn't assassinating world leaders or destroying government agencies be easy? For example, someone like Putin should have been killed long ago.
Allan: Exactly! I’ve been wondering about that myself. In an age where GPS and high-resolution aerial photography are standard, it wouldn't be surprising if such weapons were functional. If they were, couldn't someone rule the world easily without bothersome wars? You could kill anyone or destroy any car or building at any time. No one could resist an invisible ruler with that power.
Yūdai: Maybe the Lahaina "scorched-earth" event was a way of implicitly demonstrating exactly that.
Goro: A ruthless, concise declaration that "You cannot defy us"?
Allan: That’s possible. The crash of the jet carrying Prigozhin might have been a similar warning. However, the question then is: who actually possesses these DEW-style pinpoint weapons? If the U.S. military has them, Russia and China likely do too. In that case, using them recklessly would lead to a chaotic cycle of retaliation. That might be why their very existence is kept secret.
Goro: In a sense, it’s like nuclear weapons.
Allan: Yes.
And if war were to be conducted via DEW, the military-industrial complex wouldn't profit. You wouldn't need soldiers, fighter jets, or ammunition. Since the primary goal of war is the economy, they might keep any "unprofitable" system out of the public eye.
Yūdai: So, in the case of Lahaina, they used it because it was less of a "war" and more of a "real estate grab"?
Goro: It’s enough to make one lose heart.
